The Relation Between Drinking Water & Oxidation Reduction Potential
You might have heard of Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) when you were looking for an Alkaline water ionizer, but do you know what that means?? Well, then you have come to the right place. In this post, we are going to learn about ORP and its importance.
Water is vital for our existence, and we still take the quality of water for granted. Our water purification system, which we rely on every day, removes all the necessary minerals from water along with the impurities. It basically sucks up all the alkaline minerals that the body needs to perform day-to-day functions.
You should always be conscious about what you are drinking, as potable water is everywhere, but it can still be quite dangerous to drink. Water with the positive Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) value and the negative pH value is not drinkable. These two factors are considered when you look into the Alkaline water ionizer, but do you really know what ORP is and why it is so important?
Don't worry; we'll learn about it now in this post. So let's dive right in, shall we??
What is ORP?
Oxidation-Reduction Potential measures the substance's ability to either oxidize or reduce the other element. The ORP value is a measurement of the effectiveness of sanitization in water, which indicates the minimal voltage in the water. It is generated from the electric charge of reducing or oxidizing agents.
The value of ORP is measured by the electrodes of an ORP meter in millivolts or mv. The positive value on an ORP meter indicates that the substance is an oxidizing agent, whereas the negative reading indicates that the substance is a reducing agent.
Oxidizing agents try to find the electrons to balance themselves as oxidizing agents create deterioration. Reducing agents are basically antioxidants that fight off oxidation. They have excess electrons, and so they give away some.
In simpler terms, ORP is the measurement of ion exchange, where all elements want stability by either dropping electrons or grabbing them. We humans need to have a negative ORP and have a more Alkaline body to function. If the blood becomes too acidic, we can die.
The Role ORP in Drinking Water
Water with a high pH level has a higher amount of reducing agents and has a negative ORP value (-ORP)is designated by -ORP, whereas the water with a low pH has a higher amount of oxidizing agents has a positive ORP value (+ORP).
Have you ever measured the ORP value of tap water or even regular water?? If not, then; let me tell you that you are most likely to find the positive ORP value. Are you wondering why?? Well, because water isn’t just made of hydrogen and oxygen, it also has metal ions like copper, zinc, and chlorides. All these things make the water undrinkable.
Usually, tap water has ORP from +200 to +600, and the bottled water has an ORP of more than +400mv. On the contrary, Alkaline ionized water is different as it has a negative ORP value, which makes it highly antioxidant. Alkaline water ionizer changes the ORP of the regular water. The ORP value of the water is responsible for the antioxidant value and the micro clusters molecules of the water, which makes alkaline water ultra-hydrating.
The ideal ORP of drinking Alkaline water should be around -200 and -400mV, which gives the water antioxidant properties. And because of this ability to reduce oxidation, Alkaline water work against free radicals.
